Music Review – Golden brush

A Single by Santa Rosa, CA’s Vocab Slick

From the very start of Golden Brush, Vocab Slick sucks the listener into a story riddled with the wordplay, allegory and allusions we expect from a Hip-Hop track but rarely receive these days. In this second single leading to the release of his highly anticipated EP in April, Dreaming In Overtime, Vocab Slick starts out by masterfully tying billiards and bank robbery together to describe how he’s taking back what he’s owed.

The emcee who also goes by the nickname, Slick, has no qualms about letting us know he’s coming to get it either. In Golden Brush, he uses his signature staccato runs to slap you across the face with each syllable and then ends each one with a lyrical punch to gut to remind you why you should have been paying attention in the first place.

The methodical care Vocab Slick takes in writing his music is fueled by his undying passion, dedication, and respect for the culture of Hip-Hop. He’s wearing Cazals in his press photos purchased at the biggest and most respected shop in Hip-Hop, Trill Phoenix for goodness sake. He even has his own DJ because, for Vocab Slick, Hip-Hop is life. He’s put his everything into it.

The confidence is not lacking. He walks the line of braggadocio. His nickname, Slick, strategically reverberates throughout the track. And with lines like, That’s why they out here diggin’ all my written quotes, it would just be talk, if Vocab Slick didn’t have receipts to back it up. His last album, Language was met with critical acclaim. His releases consistently draw media attention from notable media outlets, including several Earmilk and Folded Waffle features. And on the music side, he’s traded bars with some of underground Hip-Hop’s most respected emcees both as a featured artist and as a collaborator bringing the talent to his own projects.

Vocab Slick has been putting in the work for over two decades and he, once again shows us why the self-proclaimed emcee won Norbay’s Best Hip-Hop and is co-founder of a decade’s long tour called, The Slap Frost Tour. He’s demanding us to “put respect on my name when it’s mentioned in a sentence” and it’s not unwarranted.

Golden Brush is out now and available for streaming and purchase. The single was produced by Portland based producer, Surebert and mixed and mastered by LA based duo, Chef Boyz. The music video, shot by Warriors’ Director of Photography Will Rushton, just wrapped up shooting and is coming soon.
